As we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week, we want to thank the incredible volunteers across Canada whose time, commitment, and compassion make a meaningful difference in our communities every day.
One of those volunteers is Bill Lewis, now a Store Associate at our Bloor location in Toronto. In November 2024, Bill connected with The Salvation Army Thrift Store through our Guest Services department, interested in employment opportunities.
During their phone call, he shared concerns that his age might limit his chances. The Guest Services representative reassured him that age is not a determining factor when it comes to employment or volunteering within our organization.
Bill was encouraged to begin by volunteering to build experience and demonstrate his commitment. Taking this advice to heart, Bill volunteered with The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle campaign and received a letter recognizing his contributions.
Bill presented this letter to Victoria Hampton, who was the Store Manager at the Bloor location at the time, which helped him secure a volunteer position in the store. Through hands-on experience and support from Victoria and District Manager Lindsay Aitken, Bill continued to grow more confident and capable in his role. His positive attitude, strong work ethic, and perseverance stood out.
With new skills, experience, and self-confidence gained through volunteering, Bill applied for a paid position and was hired as a Store Associate at the Bloor location.
“I give 100 percent to my job. I also get to make extra money as a senior to buy things for myself, and I am very happy here,” said Bill.
“Bill’s dedication, positivity, and attention to detail have made a lasting impact—keeping our store organized while lifting the spirits of everyone around him,” added Victoria.
Bill’s story is a powerful reminder during Volunteer Appreciation Week that volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it can open doors, build confidence, and create life-changing pathways to employment.
