Creating a Sense of Belonging

Karen Farran has been a dedicated part of The Salvation Army Thrift Store community in Guelph for more than a decade, but her connection runs much deeper than her job title.

After time spent working for other companies, the store associate says she “jumped at the chance” to return, drawn back by a sense of belonging, purpose, and community she hadn’t found anywhere else. For Karen, the Thrift Store isn’t just a place to shop, it’s a place where people connect.

“I always missed it here. Honestly, I kind of kicked myself for leaving. “I enjoy the sense of community. I really love the interaction with the guests, especially the regulars,” Karen says.

Many guests know Karen by name and notice when she’s not there. Known for her boisterous laugh, she cracks jokes with guests and teammates alike and is also a supportive listener when someone is having a difficult day.

“A lot of people are stressed and worried and if they can come here and forget about it and leave it behind for an hour or so, I think we really, we all really enjoy doing that. For some people, this is the only socializing they get,” she says.

Compassion Shaped by Experience

Karen’s compassion is shaped by her lived experience. She’s deeply motivated to give back, knowing firsthand how important support can be during hard times.

“I was always told it’s important to be an ambassador for your workplace, even when you’re not working,” she says. “I’ve had families tell me this store is their lifeline; that they couldn’t afford clothes or household items without it. It makes me feel good to know I’m serving that purpose.”

Guelph Store Manager Deanne Roberts says Karen is one of those team members who can be relied on to show empathy and understanding to everyone she meets.

“She’s caring, compassionate, and she truly loves amplifying the good we do for the community,” Deanne says. “She’s dependable, reliable, and will help with anything at any time. She’s loved by the whole team.”

Making a Difference Beyond the Store

That care extends beyond the store. Active in the community, Karen is often seen downtown speaking with individuals who are unhoused and listening without judgment.

Back at the store, Karen is a familiar voice on the public address system, announcing weekly promotions and annual Salvation Army Thrift Store GoodWorks@Work campaigns to raise additional funds to support The Salvation Army’s mission. Karen consistently leads all store staff in encouraging guests to donate to these campaigns.

She is a reminder that the true value of a Salvation Army Thrift Store isn’t just in what’s on the shelves, but in the people who show up every day with empathy, integrity, and compassion. In the Guelph community, Karen isn’t just a familiar face, she’s a constant source of kindness, connection, and hope.

From his first day with NRO, Vener Maldonado demonstrated our Thrift Store vision and values through both his work ethic and the genuine care he shows guests. Since being hired in January 2024 as a Sales Associate, Vener’s dedication stood out, leading to his promotion to Shift Supervisor after just two months. He’s also helped with production at the Distribution and Recycling Centre.

Whether supporting guests on the sales floor or working behind the scenes, Vener believes that small actions can make a meaningful difference.

“Working at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, I have consistently demonstrated the values of the organization through both my work ethic and my interactions with guests,” Vener says. “I take extra time to assist guests, and I often go beyond my assigned tasks to ensure they feel welcomed and supported.”

Originally from the Philippines, Vener came to Canada with his wife and is part of the team at the newly opened Sidney, BC, Thrift Store. Later this year, he will move to the Quadra location in Victoria. No matter where he works, Vener brings the same commitment to guests through care, respect and teamwork, values passed down to him from his parents.

“They taught me that in everything you do, you have to do it right,” Vener says. “I make it a priority to help organize and maintain the sales floor, creating a more positive and accessible shopping environment for everyone.”

This attention to detail and willingness to help wherever he is needed has made Vener a trusted and dependable team member. Known for his humility, he gives credit to his co-workers and strives to do his best every day.

That consistent care does not go unnoticed. For store manager Hannah Brett, his impact goes far beyond daily tasks.

Vener is a truly exceptional person whose kindness and dedication are felt by everyone around him,” Hannah shares. “He brings a natural warmth, compassion, and respect to every interaction, creating a space where guests feel genuinely cared for.”

Vener embodies what it means to serve others with heart. His commitment to donors, guests, and co-workers alike reflects the very best of who we are as a Thrift Store community.
