As part of the 2026 International Women’s Day campaign theme, Give to Gain, we invited women from across our organization to share how they actively give to support other women—whether through mentorship, visibility, encouragement, or time—and the impact they hope these actions create. Their reflections highlight the everyday generosity that helps move women forward and strengthens our community.
National Business Administration & Finance Specialist, MB
In my work and community, I make a point of creating space for women. I strive to be someone others can come to for support, clarity, or reassurance, whether that’s talking through a challenge, sharing knowledge, or simply listening when someone needs to feel heard.
I hope this approach helps women feel more confident, supported, and less alone. During pivotal and defining moments in their careers or lives, my goal is for women to trust their voices, speak up with confidence, and know their contributions matter. It’s wonderful to see empowered women lead authentically without the need to change who they are to succeed.
National Retail Specialist, ON
I was fortunate to start my career with a female boss who empowered me and helped me grow. I continue to build strong relationships with the women I work alongside and genuinely enjoy seeing women grow, be recognized, and advance in the workplace. Throughout my career, I’ve made it a priority to support, uplift, and celebrate the successes of women.
Sharing this kind of appreciation helps create a workplace where mutual respect and support are the norm. Strong collaboration, trust, and partnership shape a healthier work environment. Even small moments of recognition can make women feel valued and included.
Ottawa & Thunder Bay Assistant District Manager, ON
I promote a model of healthy boundaries for work and personal life. I mentor my staff to fulfill their professional responsibilities with confidence and without stress.
My goal for the women I hire as a manager is for them to be strong and confident.
Most women who apply for jobs at our stores are immigrants who struggle with the language barrier but have lots of potential. I recognize that potential and give them the opportunity to excel further in their career with The Salvation Army.
Store Manager, Fredericton, NB
In my life, at work, at home, in my neighbourhood and in my community, I give or have given time, encouragement, mentorship, and leadership. I have served and led various groups through work, church and community.
My hope is to strengthen my community and help others see their potential so they might grow, shine and continue building community. I enjoy the opportunity to have a positive influence and impact on my work communities through The Salvation Army Thrift Store by being a part of the greater impact.
Store Manager, Douglas Square, Calgary, AB
I actively advance women’s progress by creating an inclusive, supportive environment where women feel empowered to grow, lead, and succeed. I mentor female team members by identifying their strengths, encouraging skill development, and providing opportunity for cross-training. I also strive to model confidence, resilience, and professionalism, demonstrating that women can lead with both strength and compassion.
This creates a workplace culture where women feel valued, confident and, supported to pursue their goal without limitation. My goal is to inspire women to see themselves as capable and respected leaders.
Ontario South District Manager, ON
I help women to speak up. I encourage women to advocate for their accomplishments, ideas, and needs. Sometimes, women may hold back from taking credit or asking for what they deserve, so coaching them on how to present their value is important.
I aim to boost their confidence by being a source of encouragement when self-doubt arises. By recognizing their work achievements, I help them navigate their setbacks and remind them of their potential.
Shift Supervisor, St. Hubert store, Montreal, QC
I enjoy giving quality time to my family, work and community. I participate in the Women’s group in Montreal, socializing every weekend through Zumba and line dancing. These activities promote wellbeing for me and the women in my community, and I encourage others to join us. At work, I assist colleagues with customer questions and share my ideas and experience. These connections strengthen my relationships with loved ones, coworkers and friends, and give me a sense of fulfillment. I’m proud to work at The Salvation Army. It feels like being with family and friends.
Shift Supervisor, Strawberry Hill store, Halifax, NS
I try to encourage women that they can do anything they want to do in life. Being a good person is to give others encouragement and the knowledge that they can be who they want to be and that we each have that power.
If I have helped just one woman to see her own potential as who she can be and what she can do, then I’m very happy. I’m about building up a person to be who she wants to be. I want them to love themselves and have the ‘I can do this’ mindset.
Store Manager, Leduc, AB
Growth begins when individuals feel truly seen, heard, and valued, and I intentionally foster an environment where everyone feels supported to share ideas, take initiative, and reach their potential.
By taking the time to understand each person’s strengths and aspirations, I offer encouragement, guidance, and opportunities that help others move forward with confidence.
I hope to foster a culture where meaningful connection becomes the foundation for confidence, collaboration, and growth. By uplifting those around me, I aim to inspire individuals to believe in their abilities, pursue opportunities with courage, and recognize the unique value they bring.
