Drive-Up Innovation Makes Donating Easier at Thunder Bay Thrift Store

June 25, 2026

A simple but transformative idea at the Memorial Salvation Army Thrift Store in Thunder Bay is making it easier than ever for community members to give back.

A convenient front-of-store drive-up donor welcome centre is the first of its kind at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, designed with accessibility in mind. The new space allows donors to pull up, receive assistance directly at their vehicle, and easily drop off new and gently-used clothing and houseware items.

“For us, it really came down to convenience,” says Memorial Thrift Store Manager Danie Haney. “If you want donations, you need to give people the easiest way to do it.”

Under the old system, donors faced challenges, including limited visibility. Even with signage in place, the back-of-store setup often discouraged people from making donations.

Creating a seamless experience, Salvation Army Thrift Store donors now pull up to a dedicated area at the front of the store, where store team members are ready to assist. “After dropping off their items, guests can simply walk straight into the store to shop,” Danie says.

More Donations and Greater Impact

The store has already seen positive results, with increased donation volumes ensuring more items can be sold and reused. This means more inventory on the sales floor and more opportunities for guests to discover unique finds, while promoting environmental sustainability.

“Guests come to us to find a quality selection and high-quality clothing and housewares. This system helps us fill the store and offers the variety our community is looking for,” Danie explains.

The innovation also supports faster operations behind the scenes. With donations now arriving right at the front of the store, items can move quickly from drop-off to processing to the sales floor. This approach ensures donations of kitchenware, home décor, games and leisure items, clothing, bedding and linens, are handled efficiently and made available to guests sooner.

Supporting Community Giving and Local Programs

The new drive-up donor welcome centre reflects a deeper commitment: making it easier for community members to participate in a meaningful, full-circle model of giving—one that supports their community, protects the planet, and helps extend the life of everyday items.

“We know people want to donate to The Salvation Army because of the good we do through our Thrift Store,” Danie says. “Our job is to make that choice as simple and accessible as possible.”

Through this new donation process, The Salvation Army Memorial Thrift Store is not only enhancing our guest experience but also strengthening its ability to support essential Salvation Army programs and services in the Thunder Bay community.
