Who We Are
The Salvation Army Thrift Store, National Recycling Operations is part of the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in Canada. We are one of Canada’s largest textile collectors and a leader in textile diversion in the charitable sector. Through our Thrift Stores, we offer savings on new and gently used clothing and household items while supporting Salvation Army programs, services, and emergency relief efforts.
When you shop or donate at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, you help make a real difference. Your support helps fund local programs like food banks, school, and children’s camps. Every purchase and every donation helps people and communities across Canada.
Our history
The Salvation Army was founded in London, England, focusing on outreach to the poor, homeless, hungry and destitute.

The Salvation Army begins its work in Canada, providing hope and assistance to those in need.

Salvage work (now recycling) begins in Toronto, leading to the establishment of well-known thrift stores.

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by General William Booth and his wife, Catherine Booth. They were leaders who wanted to help people and solve social problems of their time. They saw a need for jobs and affordable goods. They also wanted to protect the environment. Because of this, they created the “Household Salvage Brigade,” where men and women collected unwanted household items.
In 1908, this work began in Toronto and led to the first thrift stores. Nearly 120 years later, there are now hundreds of Salvation Army Thrift Store locations across Canada. At The Salvation Army Thrift Store, we are proud to continue the Booths’ legacy through our Thrift Stores and Donor Welcome Centres.
