Making a Difference: Honoring Volunteers on National Volunteer Week

April 16, 2023

In celebration of Volunteer Week, we want to express our gratitude to our amazing volunteers for their invaluable contributions to our work at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, and for helping us care for our communities across Canada. This year, we are sharing the stories of two of our volunteers as a part of our volunteer appreciation initiative: Ian and Kaylyn.

Ian has been volunteering at the Milton Thrift Store in Ontario for over 4 years. What he likes most about volunteering is knowing that he is welcomed by both his co-workers and Guests, and that he can utilize his skills to maintain store organization. Ian especially likes the Home Décor section!

When Ian was asked why he chose to volunteer at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, he answered, “I like how the donations we sell in our stores help support Salvation Army programs and services in the community like foodbanks, shelters, and clothing people. It’s awesome to help others.”

By being a relatable and service focused volunteer, Ian helps to enrich the lives of both Guests and his co-workers, while caring for the Milton community. “Ian has a positive outlook on life and is always eager to help Guests while making them feel at home”, says Nancy, Milton Store Manager. “We are very lucky to have such an amazing volunteer like Ian!”

Our Surrey Scottsdale Thrift Store team in British Columbia is also appreciative of the time and passion Kaylyn dedicates to their store. In August of last year, she began volunteering with them to gain valuable retail experience while engaging with the public. Every Monday through Thursday, she spends four hours at the store completing various tasks such as organizing shelves and assisting with pricing.

Store Manager Narmada showed a fondness for Kaylyn, saying that she is “very punctual, comes in every day with a smile and everyone loves her.”

Kaylyn also added that, “The people, the environment in the store and Guests are so friendly,” and that she enjoys conversing with our regular Guests. “They all know her!” said Narmada.

Thank you, Kaylyn and Ian, for your dedication and support to our organization and the communities we serve. You truly exemplify dedication to volunteering and we are very fortunate to have you both on our Thrift Store team!

As a final shout out, we would like to thank all our volunteers for the amazing work that they do! Happy Volunteer Week!
