Celebrating our thrifters today and everyday

“Thrifting has always been favorite. I’ve been thrifting ever since I was kid. I loved the idea of bringing a new life to something someone else loved and to continue its story. Almost everything I own and wear is thrifted. For example my prom dress, it was from 1960 and I proudly wore it to my prom. It has become such a consistent line of mine that I had the phrase I got it thrifted put in the yearbook for my senior quote. I love thrifting.” ⎯ Kiki

“I was raised on thrifting! I believe in waste not, want not. For the environment, and for our own creativity and self-expression, secondhand is where it’s at. I thrift craft supplies, alter clothing, and repair and renew old jewelry. I even make new clothes and masks out of old fabric and bedsheets. All secondhand scores that make experimenting and learning affordable to anyone! Plus having access to affordable vintage items can teach people about history, materials, construction techniques… Where else can anyone buy 100% silk at a steal? 😍” ⎯  maudlin.dour

“I love the thrill of the thrift. It’s like a treasure hunt every time I go. I’ve subscribed to the e mails for access to the sales early and always being a bag full of items to donate each time I go. I work in a preschool so I like to purchase “daycare clothes” to lend to the children who have accidents. I also have four regular locations that I frequent around my city and make thrifting dates and bring my coworkers with me on weekends. The prices are so reasonable and I love the ten day return policy!! Thank you SA thrift! 👏” ⎯ forthethrillofwhit

“I started thrifting when I had a mortgage & was scrimping & saving every penny. Now I’m in a better financial situation, I still thrift because it’s the right thing to do – save the planet, help the community, be mindful. I’m proud to say, ‘Thanks, it’s thrifted.'” ⎯ Alison

“I buy all the décor items needed for both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at a seniors’ center, then donate it all back to SA after the event.” ⎯ julies1949

“I love thrifting! It is thrilling to find things you didn’t know you needed! 😍 The best for me is when I receive a compliment for something I’m wearing and I say, “I bought this at the Salvation Army!” & whether they are a senior citizen or young girl, their reaction and the smiles we give each other is priceless because if you know, you know. 😎 The game changing treasure I found this summer was the swimming flippers (fins) it gave me the ability to swim 🏊 better and more confidently!!” ⎯ Cindy

“I love finding hidden gems at the thrift stores!!” ⎯ jensencroughan

“Thrifting is my favourite way to shop! I thrift once or twice a week. I have a hard time paying retail prices anymore. i find the best deals at Salvation Army stores. It’s so much fun because I never know what I’m going to find, from clothing, housewares linens, clothes for my grandkids & books. Sometimes my sister & I go just for fun, like this day. We found this huge bra & stuck it on our heads as a hat. It’s always a good time. I like some of the girls working there also. They’re almost like friends!” ⎯ Jeannie

“I’m always in the store, I drive a good 40 minutes plus highway to get there but I love it so much! And I love that it gives back. I’m always looking slick and finding amazing deals, like this bag I got for under $50! I’m always so amazed by the deals and the styles! I love thrifting! ❤️” ⎯ Kirsten

“It’s a good money saving thing for me.. can’t afford new clothes. this is a good way to go. I like to shop in thrift stores.” ⎯ Regina

“When I’m done with the items I’ve thrifted I make sure to donate them back to the Salvation Army so they can live another life. Buying second hand at @sathriftstore means saving the planet but knowing the money we spent gets reinvested back into the community and those who need it most. A win win!” ⎯ weelove_preloved

“Since coming to Canada in 2019 I have been gradually building a home here. As a new immigrant, I had to adapt to the different seasons – boots for walking to the supermarket in winter, summer clothes went it is hot and humid. Household items have come gradually, as sometimes you need to wait for the right utensils to appear. The Booth line of bedding helps you sleep. The young children can get absorbed in trying out toys – without staff giving you a hard time – and then buying just enough for them to know we have to, “watch we don’t waste the loonies”. The hours – ours is open till 8pm most week days – means that after working a daytime shift at our local Fortinos it is still possible to visit. We appreciate the tax status, as this reminds us of the good that Salvation Army does in our local community in helping struggling families. Our son graduated High School end of June and we were able to get him a smart jacket for his Prom… maybe one day he will get married in it too, hah ha! Thanks for making our hearts richer – THRIFY FOR A BETTER LIFE IN OUR HOME OF CANADA!” ⎯ Josephine

“I’ve been thrifting since I was a child and come from a long family lineage of thrifters. Even my husband is on board with it, having given me a stand mixer for Xmas that he found at a thrift store. It was the most thoughtful gift he ever gave me because he knew I wouldn’t be happy if he bought one for me at retail price. My ideal day spent with my mom, sister and niece is visiting multiple thrift stores and hunting for bargains.” ⎯ Lori

“I’ve been thrifting for over 30 years! One of my favourite things to do is visit other cities and explore thrift shops. I thrift because of its sustainability, affordability and creativeness. It gives my family and I more eco-friendly options than shopping fast fashion. 🌍❤️🙌” ⎯ fabandthrifty

“I remember back when before I understood the value of a dollar (it’s even worse now of course) but I used to complain about thrifting, there were four of us and I definitely didn’t appreciate the “new to me” concept the way I should have. Thinking about spending full price or even winners prices, make me nauseated. My kids were born with a genetic condition where they grow excessively and rapidly, we’ve had to overturn wardrobes CONSTANTLY. It’s not only been convenient cycling through, but the prices are unbeatable + we’re lucky enough to be known by name at my local store, my daughter is a celebrity amongst the crowd as well. She loves the toys just as much as the attention 😂🙏🏼 it’s the family vibe I’ve come to really appreciate over the last few years especially ! You guys give back, another vibe we’re here for. 💗 Love that thrift day exists cause you KNOW I love ✨ any ✨ extra excuse to come shop 💅” ⎯ Nicole

I hope many others have benefitted from the lifetime of items I’ve donated from my extended family (from childhood to adulthood).” ⎯ this_is_jamie_online

“I’ve been doing it for over 25 years as I’m on disability and never had money to buy at a “regular” store. I always find something in near new or even new for a good price, if I didn’t tell anyone, they’d never know that is where I got it at! “I am a dedicated ‘dyed in the wool’ honest to god Salvation Army Thrift shopper. More than three quarters of what I own is from my local store here in New Westminster. I have a regular route through my priority interest items, and whenever I need something or even want to explore the unknown, I come here first. All my friends call it, ‘Richards Favorite Store’, and I refer to my thrift shopping as, ‘Pray n’ Pay’, because anything can be found here with a wish. <3 😉” ⎯ Richard

“Thrifting is so much more than just shopping for me. It’s shopping that I can feel good about because it’s sustainable and better for the environment. “I cannot pass a Salvation Army Thrift store wherever I travel from 30 minutes away or in another province on the other side of Canada, without it beckoning me to come in and buy things, especially for my grandkids. When we go to visit them, they are so excited to see what treasures Nanny has, in the extra suitcase. I’ve even convinced their mom to try thrifting. Now she’s hooked on it as much as I am. I purchase my clothes and many other wonderful buys at my favorite store location in the Kitsilano Salvation Army in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver. This location carefully picks only the best in clothing in particular. The employees there have become like family for me. My apartment is furnished with great buys from this location and a couple of other ones here in Vancouver. I am thankful for this store and the affordable items they have carefully selected for us customers. 🥰😍💘” ⎯ Maria
