5 Ways to Style an Oversized Sweater

One of the best allies of the fall wardrobe is the sweater. It is a key item that can be arranged in many different ways and it is extremely versatile. Of course, if it's second hand, it's even better!

I found this red oversized large knit sweater from Zara at the Saint-Hubert Thrift Store in Montreal, for just $10. In this blog, I will show you 5 ways to style it using different pieces that you can easily find in your wardrobe. Let’s get started!

1. Basic

One of the most common ways to wear an oversized sweater is paired with jeans or pants of contrasting colors. If you want to define your waist and give a dressier look to the sweater, you can always tuck it in your pants. Also, if you like to wear makeup, you can opt for a lipstick in the same color as your sweater for an eye-catching effect!

2. Sophisticated

For a sophisticated look, pair an oversized sweater with a skirt and dare to mix textures and materials! Here, I opted for a black leatherette skirt, which goes very well with the big mesh of the famous red sweater. I love this kind of contrast! The sweater could also have been worn with a fringed skirt or a pleated midi skirt. This look is very fashionable and allows us to reuse our summer skirts at different times of the year. In winter, we can even wear this look with tights.

3. Multi-purpose

If the length of the sweater allows it, you can even wear it as a dress! Put on black tights or leggings to feel comfortable, put the sweater on, and that's it! I really like to wear military boots with my sweater dress. It definitely breaks the chic effect of the dress. You can also wear a hat to add a touch of fall to the outfit or even a scarf with it.

4. Layered

In addition to the combo sweater + jeans, my favorite way to wear the oversized sweater is over a dress. A few years ago, I was always sad that I couldn't wear my summer dresses anymore once autumn came, but those days are over! Now I match my summer dresses with big knit sweaters and I swear, it's the best of both worlds! I don’t know what I did all those past years without wearing these two items together. It puts sunshine in the sad autumn days and reminds me that the versatility of the clothes is exquisite. If you want, you can tie your sweater at the waist to make a more fitted look. You'll notice that this trick gives balance to the whole look.

5. Edgy

The last, but not least, way to wear an oversized sweater is under a denim jacket. Don’t be fooled by this simple look! It gives the sweater a “rock-and-roll’ and more casual look. Pair it with black pants and tuck the sweater into them to make it more fitted. For the ultimate double denim look, don't hesitate to wear blue jeans with the jacket! It's the ultimate Canadian Tuxedo and I swear you won't go unnoticed.

Have a good thrifting session J !
