City, Province, Shoppers – Celebrate Sally Ann Thrift Store Expansion

HALIFAX, OCT 26, 2007. – This Friday, October 26th, The Salvation Army will celebrate the expansion of a key Thrift Store location in the metro Halifax area. Surrounded by two major universities, “… Green Street supports our mission well. As proceeds help support over 200 social programs, it made sense to expand the store to better serve our existing customers, provide more choices for young adults and families starting out, and continue our support of government recycling initiatives”, said Regional Director, Major Mike LeBlanc. With winter only weeks away, this expansion is great news for Halifax residents, offering great quality merchandise at very low prices.

Joining us on Friday is Mayor Peter Kelly who explains that “The Salvation Army Thrift store is an integral part of our community and we are pleased to see the expanded service here at the Green Street location. The Salvation Army is beneficial in many ways, providing an environmentally friendly setting and offering items at affordable prices. With all proceeds generated used to help fund a number of programs and services that assist those who need help in our community,” said Mayor Kelly. Also attending is Bob Kenney representing Nova Scotia’s Minister of the Environment and Labour, Mark Parent. “I congratulate the Salvation Army for their ongoing efforts to assist those in need in communities throughout the province, and whose Thrift Stores also extend the life of landfills in the province through the reuse of textiles and household items,” said Mr. Parent. As poverty, the homeless and environmental issues continue to challenge communities across Canada, Salvation Army Thrift Stores play a meaningful role in combating these issues with the help of the community.

History bite: Over 125 years ago, the Household Salvage Brigade was founded; recycling clothing, toys, and household goods to raise funds for the charity. Today, the brigade is known as Salvation Army Thrift Stores, a 100% registered charity supporting community programs, and diverting millions of pounds of valuables from landfills; helping to protect our environment.

The public is invited to shop and donate gently used goods at the opening. For alternate clothing donation locations contact Diane Vanderhorden, 902-453-2180 or visit www.thriftstore.ca. To make cash donations visit www.salvationarmy.ca.
